“Thou Art That”

In this episode of The Power of Myth, Bill Moyers and Joseph Campbell talk about how all cultures create “masks”—names and images for “God”—to serve as metaphors for inexpressible transcendence, the beginning beyond all beginning and the idea beyond all thought.

“If you see the Buddha on the path, kill him!” —Zen koan
Meaning: If you idolize gods and buddhas (etc) outside yourself, kill those images and find the inner transcendental meanings behind their many “masks”. Or as Joseph Campbell would say, “Thou Art That”.
